3D Organon Tongue Innervation
The Tongue is a muscular organ in the oral cavity. It is the primary organ of taste in the Gustatory system and is also being involved in the acts of mastication, swallowing, and speech. The innervation of the tongue involves a few nerves in it.
The Hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) innervates all of the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles that move the tongue, except the Palatoglossus m, which has Vagal innervation (CN X). Taste to the anterior two-thirds of the tongue is achieved through innervation from the Chorda tympani nerve, a Facial nerve branch (CN VII). General sensation to the anterior two-thirds of the tongue is by innervation from the Lingual nerve, a branch of the Mandibular branch of the Trigeminal nerve (CN V3).
