November is the Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

The lungs are two air-filled organs of the lower respiratory system located in the thoracic cavity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), lung cancer is the leading cause of death in 2020 (1.80 million deaths). There are two types of lung cancer the non-small and small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer is more common among the cases (85% of cases), with small lung cancer (15% of cases) being more aggressive. The chance of surviving?lung cancer for at least five years is 19%.

Multiple factors are involved in lung cancer, with smoking tobacco (active and passive) being the primary cause.? Other factors are asbestos exposure, occupational substances exposure, radiation exposure, air pollution, aging, family predisposition, and lung diseases such as emphysema.? Avoiding risk factors and implementing evidence-based prevention strategies can lead to fewer lung cancer cases. At the same time, early detection can lead to better treatment outcomes.
