Prevention is the action taken to fight cancer!

February is Cancer Prevention Month, a month dedicated to raising awareness and increasing education about the medical condition that affects millions of people globally.

According to the World Health Organization, cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

Cancer involves abnormal cell growth in a tissue with the potential to invade or spread to other tissues of the body. This contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread. There are multiple cancer types depending on the tissue it grows. It is a multifactor situation that involves gene mutations, exposure to specific environmental substances, tobacco smoking, unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, high alcohol consumption, unprotected exposure to ultraviolet rays, and of course aging, among many others.

Cancer prevention is an action taken to lower the risk of developing cancer.

There are many different ways of preventing cancer, including the following:
-Tobacco quitting
-Skin protection from the sun
-Keeping a healthy BMI
-Limiting alcohol consumption to only occasions
-Practicing safe sex
-Specific types of vaccination such as the HPV vaccine
-Regular cancer screenings according to age and the family history
-Regular exercise
 -Avoid stressful situations

Regular cancer screenings are essential to detect cancer or precancerous conditions before symptoms occur. It is important to reflect on the advances in cancer prevention and care, including screenings, early detection services, treatment advances, as well as the emotional support available in coping with cancer for individuals and their loved ones.

Most of the cancer types are treatable if you detect them early!
This February, let us come together to show our support for those people in our communities affected by cancer and raise awareness of all the cancer prevention tips!
