The nervous system is a highly organized network of neurons and neuroglia (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, and ependymal cells). The neurons or nerve cells respond to a stimulus and convert it into a nerve impulse. A neuron consists of two basic parts: the cell body, and the nerve fibers such as the dendrites and the axons. The neurons have a wide variety of shapes and sizes and they are classified based on their structure and function. Structurally, neurons are classified as multipolar, bipolar, and unipolar neurons depending on the number of fibers are extending from the cell. Functionally, neurons are classified into three types: sensory, motor, and interneurons.
