Decorated Trees are essential for Christmas celebrations. Another tree, the biliary tree, is vital for the human body. Τhe biliary tree is a group of gastrointestinal ducts that collect bile from the hepatic parenchyma to be stored in the gallbladder and then be drained to the duodenum (first part of the small intestine). The bile from the hepatocytes via collecting ducts is drained into the left and right hepatic ducts. These ducts form the common hepatic duct. Then the common hepatic duct is joined by the cystic duct. Both common hepatic and cystic ducts form the common bile duct. Then the common bile duct joins the main pancreatic duct forming the hepatopancreatic ampulla (ampulla of Vater). The ampulla opens to the second part of the duodenum through the major duodenal papilla. The sphincter of Oddi regulates this papilla.
Inflammation and lithiasis (stones) of the gallbladder and the biliary tree such as cholelithiasis, cholecystitis, cholangitis, choledocholithiasis are common clinical cases that usually require surgical treatment. Which are the other anatomical trees of the human body?
