Osteoporosis is a silent and common disease. Be osteoporosis aware!

October 20th is World Osteoporosis Day.  This day aims to raise awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.

Osteoporosis (porous bone) is a progressive disorder that decreases bone mineral density and bone mass. It is silent and common that leads to complications such as fractures.  It can affect both females and males, even children in some cases, but it is most common in women after menopause.

Ageing, menopause, lifestyle factors, female gender, chronic use of certain medications, family predisposition, and some diseases can lead to osteoporosis.

Prevention against osteoporosis or reducing further loss can be achieved by eliminating risk factors and making optimal lifestyle choices. Remember it is easier to prevent osteoporosis than live with it.
